Laviathon DiamondBack 1987-88
|

One night at a bonfire Al was sitting on a tree singing King Diamond's Abigail. Two guys
approached him. They said they had a band and needed a singer. This would be the
begining of Al's first real band, Laviathon. The guys hit it off immediately. They wrote
there first song with Al at his first practice. The song was called Haunting Evil. The
line-up included Jay Lewton on Drums, Brian Lonergan on Bass, Jim Huff on Rhythm
Guitar, and Eric Rokuski on Lead Guitar. The band played local parties to start, but
wanted to play Night Clubs in Detroit. Being under age was a challenge. The Band
hooked up with the Bass player from the band Dude, and he liked them enough to put
in a good word to the management at The Ritz, a big night club in the Detroit area.
They Changed their name to DiamondBack. The first show they played at the club
became infamous with the band. It was a Monday night and the band packed the house
with followers from the party scene. The crowd went crazy and started Moshing. The
Ritz had used glassware to serve drinks up to that point, after that they switched to
plastic. DiamondBack made two attempts at recording their material, but due to
inexperience the songs turned out horrible on tape. Al has often thought about
revisiting those songs to record them with the original band, maybe someday it will
happen. Towards the end of DiamondBack, Eric went off to GIT in Hollywood, and was
replaced by Dave Cross. Jim soon left and joined the Army, and was replaced by Kevin
Lester. The band had lost its cohesiveness and soon parted ways. Al would reunite with
some of the key members in his next project.
