In September of 2001, Al traveled to Cabo San Lucas with his family for a weekend get away.
The first night in town They ended up at the world famous Cab Wabo Cantina, owned by
Sammy Hagar. Before long Al was on Stage with Sammy's house band Vitamin T. It had been
almost seven years to the day that al had left Groovetribe, but the old magic came pouring
out. Everything that Al loved about singing was remembered in that one performance. The
crowd was once again cheering for him, this time it was a crowd of people four thousand miles
away from home. The night would go down as another crazy chapter in Al's history. As they
were leaving a stumbling half in the bag Al, decided to duck between two cars and take a
leak. Just as he finished the spotlights hit him and it was the Policia. They weren't to happy
with the drunken American who was pissing on their country. They insisted Al pay a hundred
dollar fine or go to jail. Al haggled with them over the fine telling them he only had thirty bucks
in his pocket. After about fifteen minutes of bargaining, they agreed. Al dug in his pocket and
pulled out his money and only had twenty five. The Policia took the money.
A few days later September Eleventh would change the world. Al and his family were stuck in
Mexico with no way home. Al banded together with a bunch of Americans and chartered a bus
Nine hundred miles up the Baja of California stopping every hundred miles or so at Federali
check points where machine guns were pointed at the bus while soldiers looked for weapons
and drugs. They were all dropped off at Tiajuana and walked acrossed the border. After
renting a car and driving all the way to New Mexico ( about a thousand miles) they finally got a
flight home to Cleveland. Al immediately organized two concerts to raise money for the victims
of 9/11 and the WTC. This was the begining of a new chapter in music for Al, but it all started
again at the Cabo Wabo Cantina!
This July Al returns to the Cantina for the first time in six years. He is currently in talks with the
club to return as a headliner.
